Cooking the Map: A Culinary Adventure Across Flavours and Cultures
Cooking the map is a fun and engaging way to explore the diverse culinary traditions from around the world without leaving your kitchen. It involves selecting dishes from every single country and recreating them, allowing you to experience the flavours, techniques, and stories behind each cuisine.
The idea of this blog was something I had been thinking of starting for a long time. Firstly I love cooking, it is a real passion and hobby of mine and I love to cook and try things from all over the world, stepping outside of my comfort zone.
Secondly, I felt I needed a challenge in life, something to push me to do something totally different and that is this blog. I am not a chef, nor a writer – so this is something that is really going to push me to my creative limits.
And I guess lastly I really enjoy culture, travelling and meeting new people from all over. I am lucky that I have met people from all over the world and shared in cultural experiences that I am really grateful for. One thing I have always found is that food and drink really is one of the cornerstones of society the world over. I have fond memories of bonding with people who did not speak a word of English and I did not speak a word of their language – yet we still managed to bond and enjoy each others company over food and drink.
Why Cook the Map?
Well, its a simple one really – food is a universal language that connects people across cultures. By cooking dishes from different parts of the world, you start to gain a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity and history.
It also broadens your cooking skills, introduces you to new ingredients and methods, and adds excitement to your meal planning routine. This additional exploration and adventure is a great way to spice things up (pardon the pun), and it turns the boring meals we all tend to have on weekly repeat into something more fun and adventurous.

How you can also start cooking the map
This blog may be my way to have a creative output and to challenge myself, but the joy of taking part is for everyone to get involved with. So far these are my top tips to getting started:
- Choose Your Destinations
Decide which countries or regions you want to explore. You can pick places you’ve always wanted to visit, countries with rich culinary traditions, or simply follow a continent or theme. - Research Recipes and Ingredients
Look for authentic recipes from reputable sources like cookbooks, food blogs, or cooking shows. Pay attention to the key ingredients and cooking techniques that define each dish. (but dont be scared to add your own flare to it). - Gather Ingredients
Some ingredients might be local to your area’s markets or specialty stores, while others can be found online. Don’t be afraid to substitute with similar items if you can’t find exactly what’s called for. One of the most interesting things is going to a local ethnic food market and exploring the ingredients – any maybe learning a recipe from the owner too! - Prepare and Cook
Follow the recipe carefully, but also feel free to adapt it to your taste or available tools. Cooking is both a science and an art, and even though recipes should be followed – they are only a guide. - Document Your Journey
Take photos, write notes, or keep a journal of what you cooked, how it turned out, and any interesting facts you learned about the dish or culture – who knows maybe even start a blog, that would be fun… right?

My top tips for success
Cooking comes easy for some people, and for others it is a real struggle, either way there are a few things you can do to increase the likelihood of creating that amazing dish:
- Plan Ahead: Some dishes require marinating or slow cooking, so give yourself enough time.
- Experiment: Don’t be afraid to tweak recipes or combine elements from different cuisines.
- Share Your Food: Invite friends or family to taste your creations and share in the cultural experience.
- Stay Curious: Use cooking as a gateway to learn more about history, geography, and traditions.
Thanks, and welcome.
Cooking the map is more than just another recipe blog — it’s an adventure that hopefully excites and will challenge you. Whether you’re a seasoned chef or a kitchen newbie, this approach will inspire you to try new flavours, develop your skills, and connect with the world one dish at a time. So grab your apron, pick a spot on the map, and start cooking!
Why not start in one of the continents and see what you find interesting there:
